Visa to attend an intensive German language course

If you are not an EU citizen, in many cases a language course visa is required for an intensive language course in Germany. If you have to apply for this visa, there are precise requirements you must meet before entering Germany.

Your respective diplomatic mission of the German Embassy is responsible for your visa application. Contact them to begin your application process. Following there is a link to find the contact information for your respective diplomatic mission.

General requirements for language course visas

Are you a citizen of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea or the United States of America? Then you can also obtain the required residence permit after entering the country! The same applies if you are a citizen of Andorra, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco and San Marino, provided that you do not want to take up gainful employment.
For all others, the visa must be applied for at the responsible German diplomatic mission abroad before entering Germany.

Basic requirements according to the Visa Manual (page 449) of the Federal Foreign Office

  • You need a confirmation of registration from the language school for the booked intensive language course of at least 3 months. As soon as the registration and course fee have been paid, we can prepare the confirmation of registration for the embassy. After receipt of payment, the documents will be issued within 5 working days. If your embassy does not require payment of the full course fee in advance, we will issue the documents after paying the registration fee of 50 euros. The course fee is then payable on the first day of the course.
  • Remember that only intensive language courses allow you to obtain a language visa. As a rule, there must be daily lessons with at least 18 class hours per week. Evening and weekend courses are not sufficient.
  • Your livelihood in Berlin must be secured according to general rules. For this, it is sufficient to present a sufficient, valuable declaration of commitment. In addition, you have to prove that you can pay the costs for the language course.
  • Note that the duration of your stay on the language course visa may not exceed one year.

In case of cancellation

If you do not receive a visa, please send us the cancellation from the relevant embassy. Your course fee will then be reimbursed minus a processing fee (see terms and conditions).

Sprachenatelier Berlin cannot guarantee the receipt of the visa and has no influence on the process and the duration of the visa issuing process.
