FAQs – German courses

How many students can enrol for a course?

Class size is restricted to between 6 and 14 students.

How long is each period of teaching time?

Each period lasts 45 minutes.

What qualifications do your German teachers have?

All of our German teachers are native speakers with university degrees as well as experience in teaching adults.

What is included in the course price and fees?

Included are the following: the cultural programme and extracurricular activities, enrolment receipt, registration, placement test and certificate of completion. Students are required to buy a book which is not included in the course price. We use different books depending on the course modality and level.

How long does it take to complete a language level?

Each beginner level requires approximately 8-9 weeks of intensive course work. Advanced levels might take longer.

Will I receive a certificate upon finishing a course?

Yes, Sprachenatelier issues a certificate to each student who completes a course. The certificate states the level and duration of the course. Students requiring an official certificate can register for a telc examination. For more information, ask our reception desk or send us an email: office@sprachenatelier-berlin.de

What other types of certificates do you issue?

Upon request, Sprachenatelier Berlin is happy to give you a certificate of enrolment in a course of study. A certificate of enrolment entitles you to a discount when visiting museums, cinemas and theatres around Berlin. You need to obtain a certificate of enrolment if you wish to extend your German visa at the Foreigners' Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde).

Can I do a trial lesson?

For intensive German courses, students can sit in on a class any Monday. For evening classes, a trial lesson can be arranged with the teacher. A trial lesson or trial day costs 14€.

What age are the students at Sprachenatelier?

Most students are between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. Some younger and many older students also enrol in our courses. You must be at least 18 years old to take a course. Minors must submit written permission from their parents, as we are not legally obligated for the supervision of minors.

How do I know what course level to enrol in?

Students who have done prior course work need to take a written/oral placement test before or (at the very latest) on the first day their course begins. This allows us to determine your current level. Students with previous knowledge of German can enrol and join a course already in progress (start date for joining a course in progress is always on Monday). Beginners with no knowledge of German begin their course on a scheduled date. For more info about course start dates, see our website.

Can I switch courses if I think the level isn't right for me?

Using our placement test, we attempt to determine your level as precisely and reliably as possible. If you nevertheless feel the course is too difficult, too easy or too slow for you, then we ask you to first speak with your teacher about the situation. Sprachenatelier is committed to working with you to find the best solution.

What textbooks and course material do you use?

All evening German courses at Sprachenatelier use the textbooks Spektrum, Begegnungen or Erkundungen (depending on the level) published by Schubert Verlag. In intensive German courses we use the textbooks Panorama (published by Cornelsen) or Aspekte neu (published by Klett).

After I've completed a course at Sprachenatelier, what do I need to do to apply to a German university?

In general, it should be noted that you have a better chance of being accepted by a German university if you have studied in your native country for at least one year. The following documents are necessary for applying to a German university:

  • High school diploma (a certified translation)
  • Confirmation of enrolment in a course of study in your native country
  • Good knowledge of German. A certificate attesting that you have passed the TestDaF or DSH, or the telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule examination is a basic requirement. We recommend contacting the university you wish to apply to in order to find out what exactly they require.

Can I sit the telc, TestDaF or DSH examinations in Sprachenatelier Berlin?

Sprachenatelier Berlin is a licensed examination centre for telc certifications. Contact us to find out the dates these exams may be taken at our school.

We offer preparation courses for all German examinations. Ask at our reception desk or send us an email: office@sprachenatelier-berlin.de

Does Sprachenatelier Berlin have an extracurricular activities programme?

Yes. In summer (July and August), Sprachenatelier Berlin offers a cultural programme that accompanies our intensive German courses. The programme has scheduled activities from Monday through Friday and on weekends. Excursions, readings, walking and bicycle tours as well as going to the theatre and cinema are among the activities students can participate in during the afternoon or evening. From September to June, we have scheduled cultural activities every Wednesday.

Can I work in Berlin while I'm taking a course at Sprachenatelier Berlin?

Some EU students are able to find a job quickly in Berlin. But for many the situation is more complicated. Students from non-EU countries have the most difficulty, as it is not a simple process in Germany to obtain a work permit. Sprachenatelier Berlin does not provide job placement services; both EU and non-EU students should not simply count on finding a job upon arriving in Berlin.

Do I need a visa to come to Germany?

If you need a visa to enter Germany, please send us the completed registration form, the address of the embassy in charge and the reason for your visa application (e.g. university studies in Germany, professional reasons or tourism).

You will then receive an e-mail from us with our bank details. As soon as we receive both the registration and the course fees (this is valid for participants from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India, among others), we will send you an official registration certificate and an invitation by e-mail or by post. For an extra charge of 60 euros we can arrange express delivery with DHL.

Depending on your country of origin, the decision on the visas' delivery may vary. If your visa application is rejected, you can send us the communication from the consulate and your bank account information. We will refund your payment except for the service fee of 30 euros. In case of receiving a visa, we recommend you to inform us as soon as possible about your arrival date and further details.
