A foreigner in your homeland – Russian Germans in Germany

With 2,4 Million people, the Russian Germans make up the largest minority in Germany. More than 200, 000 of them live in its capital city. Now over 15 years since their return to Germany began, many are still looking for a sense of identity and "homeland“. In Russia they were "the Germans“ and in Germany they will always be regarded as "The Russians“. Must they always be „The Foreigner“, no matter where they go?

Many film-makers have been concerned with this question in the last few years, such as Till Endemann with his film "Moon landing“ and Mario di Carlo with "Deutschland is my real homeland“.

So where do the German Russians stand in our community? How is the historically complex situation going to develop further? These and other questions will be answered by our film and workshop sequence at Sprachenatelier, in which we will try and apply some perspective to the theme of social integration.

We will also be bridging the gap between the Russian German group and other imigrants and trying to draw parallels between their respective situations, always keeping the question "What exactly is a homeland?“ in mind. Is it the place where you come from, or the place where you are and where you live?
