Culture Wednesday: Harald Hauswald - Die TEXAS BOX

Harald Hauswald is one of the most significant photographers of the GDR. He took everyday photos in the GDR to show what life looked like in East Germany. What was unusual about his work was that the photos were published anonymously in West German magazines. Hauswald was part of opposition groups himself, which is why he even received a code name, “Cyclist,” and was watched by the state security. His connections to the West were both the reason for the surveillance and the reason he was not imprisoned, as the state security feared the media coverage that such an arrest would provoke abroad. The photographs displayed in the Mauer-Mahnmal were acquired from the U.S., where they had remained in archival boxes. After 30 years, Hauswald gained access to these archived photos, which we can view together on Wednesday.
