Berlin is perhaps one of the most historically important cities in the world. You can get lost in time in the many diverse museums the city has to offer. There are over 170 in total, so choosing your favourite is not an easy task! But there is definitely something to interest everyone and always a new opportunity to broaden your horizons.
A visit to this museum is an absolute must. It opened in 1987 and as is one of the most popular Museums in the whole of Berlin. The exhibitions tell of the events and ideas throughout the History of Germany and Europe in general, from 100 BC to today. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the Museum has various special exhibitions, which last months at a time. The grounds of the Museum stretch over the beautiful street called Unter den Linden.
If you are interested in the history of the GDR, the GDR Museum is for you. It opened in 2006 and is concerned with GDR culture, ideology, lifestyle, people, state, boundries, Berlin Wall, Stasi etc. It is particularly interesting because it is interactive, so you can get inside a Trabant car, look at and feel the clothes of the time and so on. A visit to the GDR Museum really immerses you into the world of the GDR.
Another historically important museum is the Stasimuseum, located in the district of Lichtenberg. Visitors have been allowed here since 1990. Since the days where the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Mfs) was controlling the Berlin citizens, it has become a place to remember and research the GDR culture.
The Ministerium für Staatssicherheit stretches over 8 hectars and is connected to the other buildings on Museum Island. Plans have been made to change the basement into an exhibition area with disabled access. The two courtyards are covered with glass pannels.
